Four kinds of ERCES testing — one team
An Emergency Responder Communication Enhancement System (ERCES) is tested at four points in its lifecycle. JB Technologies handles all four with our own RF technicians and equipment, nationwide.
1. Pre-construction RF benchmark
Before any design work starts, JBT takes a live signal reading at the building against the local public safety trunked system. This determines two things: (a) whether ERCES is code-required at this address per the local AHJ's grid pass/fail criteria, and (b) if so, how much amplification and how many antennas will be needed to meet the coverage requirement. Skipping this step means designing blind — you can spec a BDA that's undersized (fails grid) or oversized (wastes budget).
2. Plan-review coverage prediction
Some AHJs (particularly in the Southeast + Florida) require the designer to submit a coverage prediction as part of the ERCES design package. JBT runs iBwave or similar RF modeling against the benchmarked donor signal, produces the required per-floor coverage maps, and hands off the report to the PE for signing.
3. Post-installation closeout grid test
The main event. NFPA 1225 §6 / §7 defines the grid test methodology: divide each floor into a 20-grid or 40-grid pattern (depending on building size), verify signal strength and BER at each grid point using calibrated portable radios keyed on the local trunked system, and document the pass/fail at each point. Coverage requirement: 90 % general, 99 % critical area.
The AHJ witnesses this test. If a grid point fails, the design has to be adjusted (antenna added, gain increased, coupler re-zoned) and the test rerun. JBT commissions internally first, so the AHJ-witnessed test succeeds on the first pass.
4. Annual + 5-year recertification
NFPA 1225 §14 requires a functional test every year — donor signal check, battery load test, antenna VSWR, fire command annunciator test, alarm-point verification, and a signed report filed with the AHJ. Every 5 years, the annual is joined by a full grid retest — a fresh coverage baseline against the current live donor signal. See our annual test + retest page for prepay plans.

- Antenna VSWR meter for connector torque and antenna performance checks.

What does an ERCES test cost?
Testing costs scale with building size and the test scope. Pre-construction RF benchmark runs $250–$1,500 for a typical commercial site. AHJ-witnessed closeout grid test is normally bundled with the installation contract. Annual functional test runs $2,500–$15,000 depending on building size. 5-year full grid retest is priced separately based on grid size.
Do I need to test if the building already has an ERCES?
Yes. NFPA 1225 §14 requires annual functional testing for the life of the building and a full 5-year grid retest. Skipping the annual test can void the Certificate of Occupancy record and creates liability exposure if the system fails during an incident.
How long does the AHJ-witnessed grid test take?
It depends on building size. Small commercial (under 100,000 SF) runs 4–8 hours on site. Large hospital / high-rise / industrial (over 250,000 SF) can run 2 days. JBT commissions internally first so the witnessed test passes on the first pass — a re-test is scheduled weeks out and delays your closeout.
Do you test systems installed by other contractors?
Yes. JBT will do annual functional tests, 5-year grid retests, and coverage audits on any existing ERCES regardless of the original installer. We'll flag whatever needs remediation (BDA replacement, antenna re-siting, coupler re-zoning) and quote the work separately.
What paperwork do I get after testing?
A signed test report with all grid point data, pass/fail summary, donor signal readings, battery test results, and antenna VSWR. Formatted to your local AHJ's spec. Filed on the building record so your annual compliance stays current.
