What is IFC Section 510?

Section 510 of the International Fire Code (IFC) — titled Emergency Responder Radio Coverage — is the fire-code provision that requires adequate in-building radio coverage for first responders. Because most U.S. jurisdictions adopt the IFC (or a state fire code derived from it) as their base fire code, IFC 510 is the clause that actually makes ERCES enforceable in most of the country. It is the fire-code hook; the detailed technical requirements are carried in referenced standards like NFPA 1225 and UL 2524.

IFC 510 and the −95 dBm number

The most-cited number in Section 510 is the −95 dBm minimum inbound and outbound signal strength. Some AHJs additionally or instead specify a Delivered Audio Quality (DAQ) target. The signal-strength number and the coverage percentage together define pass/fail on the witnessed grid test.

How IFC 510 relates to NFPA 1225

Think of it as fire code plus referenced standard. IFC 510 is the enforceable clause your building official cites. NFPA 1225 (formerly the NFPA 1221 / NFPA 72 Ch. 24 material) supplies the deeper technical detail and testing methodology. A jurisdiction may adopt IFC 510, NFPA 1225, or both — and may amend either locally. Always confirm which documents and which editions your AHJ has adopted before designing to a specific number.

Does IFC 510 apply to my building?

That is an AHJ determination driven by whether the building already meets the required exterior-to-interior coverage. The reliable way to answer it is a pre-construction RF benchmark: measure the actual public safety signal at the building against the local trunked system. Pass, and no ERCES is required.
